Academics at AEF High School

AEF’s High School program focuses on preparing students for the enhanced workload they will face in high school.

A robust curriculum consists of core subjects such as Language Arts and Math supplemented by Art, Science, Social Studies, PE, Dance, Computers, IT, Social Skills, and Library.

Our teachers find the style of learning that works best for each student, tapping into their enthusiasm for discovery. Rather than requiring students to conform to one traditional format, innovative approaches are used to reach every learner. Students master the material, but they’re able to master it in the best way for them, whether that’s through listening, reading, or doing.

AEF High School represents a significant shift from traditional high school philosophies, with a maximum enrollment of 80 students. Self-governing and characterized by high expectations for all students, AEF Schools emphasizes equity in student outcomes, shared decision-making among faculty, individualized instruction and attention, and a strong focus on the “new five R’s” – Rigor, Relevance, Relationships, Resiliency, and Responsibility.”

Dual Enrollment / Advanced Placement

Juniors and Seniors who have completed required High School credits, and whose scores qualify on the SAT, ACT, or CPT will be eligible for dual enrollment at a local community colleges.

Standardized Testing

Terra Nova (Grades 1 - 12)

• A nationally standardized achievement test.
• Areas that are assessed are Reading/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies
• Advantage of longstanding and thorough data on validity and reliability
• Progress can be tracked over years and / or by grade

ACT (Grades 9 - 12)

• The ACT® test assesses high school students’ general education development and their ability to complete college-level work.
• The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science.
• The Writing Test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay.

SAT (Grades 9 - 12)

• The SAT Reasoning Test is the nation’s most widely used admission test among colleges and universities. It tests students’ knowledge of subjects that are necessary for college success: reading, writing, and mathematics.
• The SAT assesses the critical thinking skills, students need for academic success in college-skills that students learned in high school.
• Subject Tests (formally SAT II: Subject Tests) are designed to measure students’ knowledge and skills in particular subject areas, as well as their ability to apply that knowledge.
